Dt. Ertan Omerov – MSc in Periodontology and Implantology, Er Dental Clinic Istanbul

Periodontology is the branch of dentistry that deals with the gums and the bone that hold teeth in place. Implantology deals with replacing lost teeth with implants placed in that same bone. The two belong together: an implant is only as stable as the gum and bone around it, and gum disease that is left untreated is one of the most common reasons teeth are lost in the first place.

Dt. Omerov's postgraduate training covered both. In practice that means he looks at the condition of your gums and the amount of bone available before talking about the number or type of implants, and he treats inflamed gums first when that is what the X-ray and examination show.

The patients Dt. Omerov sees most often come with missing teeth, bleeding or receding gums, bone loss after a tooth has been missing for years, or a gummy smile where the gum line needs attention before any cosmetic work. For many of them the question is not only how to replace a tooth, but whether the gums and jawbone are ready for it.

His work sits mainly in two treatment areas. On the implant side: single dental implants, immediate dental implants placed on the day a tooth is removed where the bone allows it, zirconium implants for patients who prefer a metal-free option, and guided bone regeneration when there is not enough bone for an implant. On the gum side: professional dental cleaning, scaling and polishing, and gum treatment before restorative or implant work begins.

Dt. Omerov's view is that predictable results start with an accurate diagnosis and careful planning. Before recommending a treatment he evaluates three things together: the health of the gums and bone, how your bite works, and what you expect the result to look like.

He aims to protect healthy tooth structure wherever possible and to build restorations on stable gums and bone, because that is what keeps them working for the long term. Clear explanations and planned follow-up are part of every treatment, from the first consultation to the final check.

Dt. Omerov studied dentistry at Istanbul University Faculty of Dentistry (Çapa), one of Turkey's longest-established dental schools. In 2017 he enrolled in postgraduate training in Periodontology and Implantology at UKIM Faculty of Dentistry and graduated with a Master of Science (MSc).

He continues his education through international training programmes and world dental congresses, following evidence-based techniques and new technology in gum and implant care.
