Dental Crowns in Istanbul: Strong, Natural-Looking Tooth Restorations for International Patients

Dental crowns are one of the most reliable solutions for restoring damaged, weakened, or heavily restored teeth. A crown is a custom-made “cap” that covers the visible part of a tooth to rebuild its strength, shape, and appearance. Crowns are commonly recommended after large fillings, root canal treatment, fractures, severe wear, or when a tooth needs full coverage for long-term protection.

At ErDental in Istanbul, crown treatment is planned with a precision-focused and patient-friendly approach. Each crown is designed to match your natural smile while supporting comfortable chewing and long-term durability. For international patients, the process is organized to be efficient and clear, with modern diagnostics and careful aesthetic planning from the first step.

What Are Dental Crowns?

A dental crown is a fixed restoration that fully covers a tooth, acting like a protective shell. Unlike a filling, which repairs only a part of the tooth, a crown protects the entire tooth structure above the gumline. Crowns can also be used on dental implants to replace missing teeth, or as part of bridges to restore multiple teeth.

Who May Need a Dental Crown?

Dental crowns may be recommended if you have:

  • A tooth weakened by a large cavity or a large filling
  • A cracked, chipped, or broken tooth
  • A tooth that has undergone root canal treatment
  • Severe tooth wear from grinding or erosion
  • Aesthetic concerns such as shape irregularities or strong discoloration
  • An implant that requires a crown for the final visible tooth

Before planning a crown, the tooth and gums should be healthy and stable. If there is active gum disease, infection, or untreated decay, these issues should be addressed first to support a safe and long-lasting result.

Dental Crown Types at ErDental

Choosing the right crown type depends on several factors, including the location of the tooth, bite force, aesthetic expectations, and the condition of the remaining tooth structure. Below are the most commonly used crown options in modern restorative dentistry.

Zirconium Crowns

Zirconium crowns are metal-free restorations known for their strength and durability. Modern zirconia materials can also deliver excellent aesthetics, making them suitable for both back teeth and selected front-tooth cases depending on the desired translucency.

  • High strength and long-term durability
  • Metal-free, biocompatible material
  • Suitable for patients with higher bite forces
  • Natural-looking results with modern zirconia options

Zirconium crowns are often preferred when a tooth needs maximum reinforcement, especially in the posterior region where chewing forces are stronger.

Metal Porcelain Crowns (PFM)

PFM crowns (Porcelain-Fused-to-Metal) combine a strong metal framework with a porcelain outer layer. This structure provides solid support and can be a practical option in cases where strength is a priority and the crown is not in a highly visible aesthetic zone.

  • Strong internal metal support
  • Porcelain outer layer for a tooth-colored appearance
  • Commonly used for back teeth and bridges
  • Long history of clinical use and predictable performance

In some cases, PFMs may show a darker line near the gum over time, especially if the gum level changes. For patients seeking a fully metal-free aesthetic result, other crown options may be more suitable.

E-Max Crowns

E-max crowns are made from lithium disilicate ceramic and are widely known for their natural translucency and refined aesthetics. They are often chosen for front teeth and smile-zone restorations where achieving a highly natural, enamel-like appearance is a main priority.

  • Excellent translucency and lifelike aesthetics
  • Metal-free and highly aesthetic
  • Ideal for front teeth and cosmetic cases
  • Strong ceramic material when used in suitable indications

E-max crowns are an excellent choice when you want a natural finish that looks realistic in daylight and in photos, especially for visible teeth.

Full Ceramic Crowns

Full ceramic crowns are metal-free restorations designed to provide strong aesthetics with a natural tooth-like appearance. They can be recommended for patients who want a more cosmetic-focused result, especially for front teeth and visible areas, depending on the case requirements.

  • Metal-free and natural-looking
  • Good color matching and aesthetic blending
  • Often preferred for visible front-tooth restorations
  • Suitable for patients with metal sensitivities

The best ceramic type depends on your tooth position and bite. Your dentist will recommend the most appropriate option to balance appearance and durability.

How Dental Crown Treatment Works

Crown treatment is usually completed through a structured process designed to ensure precise fit, stable bite alignment, and natural appearance.

Step 1: Consultation and Diagnosis

Your dentist evaluates your tooth structure, gum health, and bite. Digital X-rays and, when needed, advanced imaging support accurate planning. The goal is to confirm that the tooth can be restored safely and to choose the crown type that fits your needs.

Step 2: Tooth Preparation

The tooth is gently shaped to create space for the crown. If the tooth is weakened, a build-up may be performed to reinforce the base before the crown is placed. Comfort is maintained with local anesthesia.

Step 3: Digital Scan and Shade Selection

A digital scan is taken to design a crown that fits precisely. Tooth shade, translucency, and shape details are selected to match your smile and your aesthetic goals.

Step 4: Temporary Crown

In many cases, a temporary crown is placed to protect the tooth and maintain appearance while the final crown is being prepared.

Step 5: Final Crown Placement

The final crown is checked for fit, bite accuracy, and aesthetics. Once confirmed, it is securely bonded or cemented in place to provide a stable, long-lasting restoration.

How Long Do Dental Crowns Last?

Crown longevity depends on the material selected, bite forces, oral hygiene habits, and regular dental check-ups. With proper care, crowns can remain functional and aesthetic for many years.

To protect your crown:

  • Brush and floss daily, keeping gums healthy
  • Avoid biting hard objects such as ice, pens, or hard candy
  • If you grind your teeth, ask about a night guard
  • Attend routine dental cleanings and check-ups

Frequently Asked Questions About This Treatment
Have questions about this treatment? You’re not alone. From treatment timelines to costs and recovery, we’re here to guide you with clear answers, expert advice, and personalized support at every step.
Can you guarantee that the price you gave me is final?

We completely understand your anxiety. Sadly, 'bait-and-switch' tactics do happen in this industry, but we strictly operate on transparency and ethics. The price we quoted is based on a careful analysis of the X-rays and photos you sent, and for the vast majority of patients, that price does not change.

However, remote X-rays are 2-dimensional. Once you sit in the chair for a 3D examination, there is a small chance we might find a hidden issue—such as insufficient bone density—that requires a procedure like a sinus lift or bone grafting to ensure your implants don't fail.

The difference with our clinic is that we warn you about these specific possibilities before you travel, rather than surprising you with them later. If we do find a medical need to adjust the plan, we will show you the X-ray evidence, explain why it is necessary, and get your full approval before doing anything. We will never force a hidden charge on you.

Do you help with hotel arrangements, or do I need to figure that out myself?

Please don’t worry about that—we don't expect you to navigate a new city alone. Since most of our patients visit us from other countries, assisting with accommodation is a standard part of what we do.

We can provide you with a list of trusted, comfortable hotels located very close to the clinic, or if you prefer, we can handle the booking process entirely for you. Our goal is to make sure you have a safe and convenient place to rest so you can focus 100% on your treatment.

Is Turkey actually safe for tourists right now, and will I be safe during my trip?

We completely understand your concern, but you can rest assured: Yes, it is very safe. Turkey is one of the top tourist destinations in the world, welcoming millions of visitors from Europe and the US every year without issue.

In major cities like Istanbul, the safety advice is the same as it would be for London, Paris, or New York—just use standard common sense.

More importantly, you won't be navigating the city alone. We arrange your VIP airport transfers and book you into trusted, secure hotels. From the moment you land until you leave, we handle the logistics to ensure your experience is not only successful but also completely stress-free and safe.

What specific brands or materials do you use for the crowns and veneers?

We prioritize quality and strictly use top-tier, globally recognized materials. We don't cut corners on the products that go into your mouth.

For cosmetic treatments like Veneers, we use Ivoclar, a premium Swiss brand famous for its natural aesthetics. For more complex, structural work—such as All-on-4 or All-on-6 implant bridges—we rely on Amman-Girrbach, which is known for its exceptional strength and durability. We choose the best material based on whether you need maximum beauty or maximum support.

Is there a way to see exactly what the teeth will look like before you permanently make them?

Yes, absolutely! We believe you should never have to guess what your smile will look like. We use a process called a 'mock-up,' which acts like a test drive for your new smile.

We place a temporary model directly in your mouth so you can see the exact shape and color in the mirror and see how it fits your face. This stage is crucial because, while we can paint the final teeth slightly darker later if needed, we cannot make them whiter once they are finished.

We will not produce the final permanent teeth until you have approved this preview and are 100% happy with the look.

I’d love to improve my smile, but I’m really worried about filing down my natural teeth. Is it possible to get veneers or crowns without shaving them?

That is a very common concern. The answer depends entirely on which solution we choose for your smile.

If you need Dental Crowns, some preparation is unavoidable. Because a crown covers the entire tooth like a cap, we must shape the tooth first; otherwise, the result would look bulky and unnatural.

With Porcelain Veneers, however, the process is much more conservative. Usually, we only need to remove a tiny layer—about the thickness of a contact lens (0.3 mm)—from the front surface. This allows us to keep almost all of your natural tooth structure intact.

We also offer a specific treatment called 'Prepless Veneers' (Lumineers), where absolutely no shaving is required. However, this isn't for everyone. Your natural teeth need to have a specific shape and bite alignment for this to look good. We would need to examine you first to see if you are a candidate for this zero-shaving option.

Do you accept online payments?

We understand that flexibility is important. We do offer a variety of payment solutions designed to make things easy for our patients.

To ensure we provide you with the most secure and suitable option for your specific situation, please reach out to our team directly, and we will guide you through the details.

I am traveling from another country for my treatment. Does the price include my hotel stay and airport transfers, or do I need to book those myself?

That depends on the specific treatment package you choose. We offer different options—some are all-inclusive packages that cover your accommodation and VIP transfers, while others focus strictly on the dental procedure.

To give you an accurate answer, please contact our team directly. We can check the details of the treatment plan you are interested in and let you know exactly what is included.

Is it possible to split the cost into installments? Paying the full amount upfront might be difficult for me.

We understand that financial flexibility is important. We do have different payment options available to help manage the cost of your treatment packages.

Since the specific plans can vary, please reach out to our team directly. We would be happy to explain the details and help you find a payment solution that works best for you.

Is my dental treatment covered by a warranty?

Yes, absolutely. We stand behind the quality of our work, and every treatment we provide is backed by a guarantee for a specific period of time (subject to standard terms). If you would like to know the exact details of our warranty policy, please reach out to us and we will be happy to explain.

I really want to improve my smile, but I don't know where to start. What are my options?

It really depends on what you want to change, but we have a solution for almost everything. We usually look at it in three ways:

  • For color: If you just want brighter teeth, Professional Whitening is the way to go.

  • For shape and style: If you want to change the shape of your teeth, close gaps, or get that perfect 'Hollywood Smile,' we use Laminate Veneers or Zirconia Crowns.

  • For alignment: If your teeth are crooked, we can straighten them with Orthodontic treatments.

Since every mouth is different, the best first step is for us to take a look at your teeth. We can then design a plan that fits exactly what you are looking for.

I’m interested in getting a gold crown or adding some jewelry to my tooth for a specific look. Is that something you can do?

Yes, we can do it, but we generally advise caution.

While gold is a strong material, decorative caps or tooth jewelry are often purely for fashion and don’t always fit as precisely as a medical crown. This can create small gaps where food and bacteria get trapped, which might lead to cavities or gum problems later on.

If this is really what you want, we can arrange it as a special request. However, our main priority is your oral health, so we usually recommend standard medical crowns because they are safer, cleaner, and better for your teeth in the long run.

Can I postpone my dental treatment for a while, or is it better to start right away?

In some situations, delaying dental treatment for a short period may be possible, but it is generally not the healthiest choice. Many dental issues begin quietly, without noticeable pain or discomfort, and tend to progress over time.

What starts as a small cavity or mild gum problem can develop into a more serious condition, such as infection, intense pain, tooth damage or loss, and even bone loss if left untreated. This often means the treatment later becomes more complex and costly.

If your dentist confirms that the problem is not urgent, a brief delay may be acceptable. However, the longer treatment is postponed, the greater the risk of complications. The smartest step is to consult your dentist and plan a treatment schedule that works for you while still safeguarding your long-term oral health.

If I’m getting dental implants, should I choose E-Max or zirconia crowns?

For implant-supported crowns, zirconia is usually the safest and most reliable option for the majority of patients. Dental implants need to handle strong chewing forces, and zirconia is known for its exceptional strength and durability, especially in the back teeth where most biting pressure occurs. This makes it ideal for molars, multiple implants, and full-mouth restorations.

E-Max crowns, on the other hand, are fully porcelain and offer a more natural, translucent appearance that closely resembles real teeth. Because they are slightly less resistant to heavy force, they are typically recommended only for single implants in the front teeth, where aesthetics are the top priority and chewing pressure is lower.

In summary, if your main concern is achieving the most natural look for a front implant, E-Max can be an excellent choice. For all other implant areas—particularly the back teeth—zirconia stands out as the stronger, longer-lasting solution.

Why are zirconia crowns a better choice for back teeth than veneers?

The back teeth are responsible for most of the chewing and grinding, which means they are exposed to strong biting forces every day. Zirconia is an extremely durable material, making it well suited to withstand this constant pressure without cracking or breaking.

Veneers, by comparison, are very thin restorations that cover only the front surface of a tooth. Although they provide excellent aesthetics, they are not built to تحمل heavy chewing forces. If veneers were placed on back teeth, they would be at a high risk of breaking in a short time.

For this reason, veneers are mainly used on the front teeth where appearance is the main concern, while zirconia crowns are recommended for back teeth where strength, stability, and long-term durability are essential.

Why are E-Max crowns not suitable for making dental bridges?

E-Max crowns are produced entirely from porcelain and do not have a reinforced inner core like zirconia or metal-supported crowns. This all-ceramic structure gives them an excellent, natural appearance, but it also makes them more delicate under heavy stress.

A dental bridge has to withstand strong chewing and biting forces because it connects multiple teeth and carries more load. Since E-Max lacks internal support, using it for a bridge increases the risk of cracking or fracture during normal function.

However, E-Max can still be safely used on both front and back teeth—or even on implants—when it is applied as a single crown. It is most commonly preferred for the visible front teeth, where aesthetics are a priority and biting forces are lower.

Are crowned teeth more likely to develop decay than natural teeth?

Teeth that have been prepared for crowns can be slightly more susceptible than untouched natural teeth, which is why responsible dentists avoid reshaping healthy teeth unless there is a clear clinical or aesthetic reason, such as correcting shape, color, bite function, or smile design.

While crowned teeth do carry a somewhat higher risk of issues like decay or cracks, the crown itself is not usually the problem. The real concern is the natural tooth beneath the crown. If the crown does not fit precisely or if oral hygiene is poor, bacteria and food debris can accumulate at the margins and lead to decay or infection underneath.

The good news is that when crowns are properly designed and placed by an experienced dentist—and when you maintain good daily oral hygiene and attend regular dental check-ups—the risk of decay under a crown is very low. Crowns do not automatically cause dental problems; with quality dental work and consistent care at home, they can function healthily for many years.

How long can I expect my dental crowns to last?

The longevity of dental crowns largely depends on your oral care routine. Even though a crown covers the tooth, your natural tooth is still underneath and needs proper care. If you brush at least twice daily and see your dentist every six months for check-ups and professional cleanings, crowns can commonly last 20–25 years.

In some cases, patients have kept their crowns for 30 years or more. That said, many dentists suggest evaluating or replacing crowns around the 15-year mark. This is not always due to damage to the crown itself, but to safely remove it, examine the tooth and gums underneath for any hidden issues, and renew the restoration if necessary.

With consistent oral hygiene and regular dental visits, crowns can remain healthy and functional for decades.

How much of my natural teeth will be reshaped for veneers compared to crowns?

The amount of tooth preparation depends on the type of restoration chosen. Veneers, also called laminates, are very thin porcelain shells designed mainly for aesthetic improvements. Because of their delicate structure, they are typically used on the teeth visible when you smile. To place veneers, only a minimal layer is gently removed from the front surface of the tooth, usually around 0.2–0.5 mm, so the majority of your natural tooth structure remains intact.

Zirconia crowns, however, are much stronger and are suitable for all teeth, including the back chewing teeth and implant-supported restorations. For this treatment, the tooth is reshaped evenly from all sides to allow the crown to fully cover and protect it.

In short, veneers involve very conservative preparation and are mainly for front teeth, while zirconia crowns require more shaping, cover the entire tooth, and offer greater strength for both front and back teeth.

I am really stressed about picking the wrong shade. What happens if I see the final teeth and decide they are too dark or too white? Can we change the color at that point?

That is the most common worry we hear! You will have plenty of time during your stay (usually 7–10 days) to test the look, but there is one 'Golden Rule' you need to know about dental ceramics:

We can always make the teeth darker, but we cannot make them whiter once they are made.

If you try them on and feel they look too bright or 'fake,' we can easily send them back to the lab to add texture and darker tones to make them look more natural. However, if you choose a darker color initially and then decide you want them whiter, we cannot fix that—we would have to build the whole tooth again from scratch.

This is why we guide you carefully through the color selection process. If you are stuck between two shades, we usually suggest picking the lighter one, because it gives us the flexibility to adjust it later if needed.

I keep hearing about veneers, zirconia crowns, and composite bonding. I want a better smile, but I’m confused—what is the actual difference between them, and which one is better?

It’s easiest to understand the difference by looking at how much we touch the tooth and how long they last.

1. Laminate Veneers (The Cosmetic Choice):
Think of these like a contact lens or a false fingernail. They are designed purely for aesthetics—to give you that bright 'Hollywood Smile.' Because they only cover the front of the tooth, the preparation is very light; we only shave a tiny layer (about 0.3 mm) off the front surface.

2. Zirconia Crowns (The Protective Choice):
A crown is like a helmet that covers the entire tooth—front, back, and sides. We use Zirconia when a tooth is damaged (like after a root canal or on an implant) and needs structural support. Because it covers the whole tooth, we have to shave down more of the natural tooth to make it fit. Zirconia is the strongest material we have, so it offers both protection and beauty.

3. Composite Veneers:
We usually advise against these for full smile makeovers. Composite is essentially filling material. While it is cheaper, it is porous—meaning it absorbs stains and can chip or break within 1 to 2 years.

Summary: If your teeth are healthy and you just want them to look perfect, we use Veneers. If your teeth are damaged or weak, we use Zirconia Crowns. We generally avoid composite if you want a long-lasting result.
